"What shall we die for?" The old man's voice was thick, hoarse with years of use. The fact that he could still speak was incredible when one stopped to consider the wicked scar across his neck. "That's the question we asked ourselves." His single eye scanned the small gathering of children and adults alike. The latter stood with an air of respect while the little ones beheld the veteran with a grandiose awe. "Glory? Honor? Power?" He paused. "What rot. A war without purpose, that's what it was. All of us conned into a massacre of all sides, and what for? Just so some greed-driven bastards could garnish a few moments of satisfaction." Anger settled into the ever-growing crowd as the tone became laced with venom, those very words enough to strike the heart of those that listened. Everyone had lost something in the conflicts that arose from the clashing of the grand Shinobi villages, some more than others; yet a peculiar kinship could be found with any member of society, even here in the midst of strangers. "What shall we die for. That's the attitude we held. That's the reality we settled on. There wasn't a higher purpose, just a will to protect our own. Save who we could. And after all that... we failed." Silence thick as steel overtook the heart of the people at those words. The old story teller was harsh, but he spoke with the unwanted air of truth. Little had been won in the eyes of the people. "But come now." His voice lightened, a gesture that served to give hope to the young faces that had only frowned so briefly before. "Stick around and you'll know just what we died for. And maybe..." The old ninja's lips cracked into a knowing smirk as he surveyed his spectators. "...you'll learn what to live for."

Here at Naruto RPG Online we have decided to propel things into the future and separate out the events from the series from our own. We still use the same world-set, but we don't want to be restricted by an ever-evolving story that favors certain characters due to the "speed of plot" and other events that could drastically change the setting with information that has yet to be released. For all intents and purposes, imagine that we are some fifty years ahead of the series and that canon characters are either dead or retired.
The Second Great Ninja War
Decades after the first war the villages had set themselves upon preventing another such tragic event from taking place, but often history finds itself stuck on the course of an ever-spinning wheel. Fueled by the devious plots of Akatsuki the war started as nothing more than a simple conflict between Konoha and the remaining rogues of Oto. Despite their advanced technology, the ninja of the Sound Country were vastly outnumbered and called for help from their western neighbors from Iwakagure whom had previous hostilities with the Hidden Leaf. Always up for a game of revenge, the Ninja of Iwa responded immediately with their full support. Put into a dangerous situation, Konoha pulled a favor from it's close allies from the Wind Country and thus a full fledged war broke into being between three of the most powerful villages on the continent. Unfortunately it did not end there. Akatsuki - knowing of the previously hostile actions of the Hidden Mist - egged the rogues of Oto into staging a false attack on the Water Country via the Konoha banner. Outraged by this attack, the Mist Ninja hit the Fire Country's flank and were relentless with whom they killed; going so far as to even bring the Daimyo into the conflict. Now with the intervention of the standard military, the war arose with a new fervor and began to mix both Ninja and mundane soldiers. The other countries were quick to follow suit, fearing for their own borders with this new addition to the fray. Outnumbered, the the forces of Wind and Fire called upon the Lightning Country for aide, having been fairly neutral until this time. Split between their decision due to petitions from the other side as well, a civil war broke out amongst the populace and the Ninja village renounced it's loyalty to the Daimyo, siding with Konoha and Suna. The years that followed were bloody and marred with death. The entire continent was eventually tossed into the fire with even the lesser shinobi countries brought into the conflict, forced to choose sides or face annihilation.
After seven years of bloody conflict the goals of Akatsuki were exposed by a member turned traitor. Informing each country of their 'role' in the ultimate plot of the secretive group, the five Kages of each village decided to put an end to the war with a shaky treaty. The most powerful of the village Jounin accompanied the elite group, perhaps consisting of the most powerful individuals the ninja world had ever seen. Unfortunately, they had been lured into a trap and were ultimately met with disaster, each of the Kages falling prey to the plots of Akatsuki. The only survivors were a lucky few Jounin that had escaped the notice of their enemies. With the knowledge they possessed - and fueled by the ire of such a trick - the remaining Shinobi of the five major villages banned together once more and hunted down the members of Akatsuki, separating each of them and dealing a vicious blow to the organization. Only one member was able to escape, yet he was powerless to continue what had been started.
Now free from the meanderings of outside influence, the war finally ended with the treaty that had been signed by the five kages that had sacrificed themselves so willingly for their villages. The remaining Shinobi and Daimyo's retreated back to their borders and resumed their lives, attempting to pick up the pieces and rebuild what they had once had.
Current State
The entire continent is still attempting to recover from the disastrous effects of the war. The villages are severally undermanned and even the original six are without Kages still. Crime runs high and missions are rare these days as the people have lost trust in the Shinobi, rarely calling on them for help. Villages are still being rebuilt and great structures now lie in ruins, though there is a general effort to reform what was lost. Academies have only been reinstated recently and the number of Ninja is sorely lacking in all ranks. Even ANBU is struggling to regain it's foot hold as the sparse numbers hardly have the time to devote with their own villages being in such states of disarray.
